Although M.I.A.’s 2010 has been rather bogged down by not-so-flattering reviews of her third album ‘MAYA’ and some beefs with the New York Times, she’s still a woman with her fan’s hearts at mind. At this past weekend’s Hard Festival on New York’s Governor’s Island, M.I.A.’s headlining set was cut short due to thunderstorms. And as much as folks love to see her skills lighting up the mic, actual lightning overtook her set.

To make up for it, M.I.A. is promising to return, though she’s issued a disclaimer that she’s not responsible for any bad weather.

“F— it! I’m gonna do a free show in nyc when i get back, tho i dont have powers over rain!” she tweeted [sic'd] last night. “If u still have the hard ticket u free! xxxo.”

Not in possession of a ticket stub? Have no fear: She went on to say “if u do me a lil dance, ill let u in too!”

Alas, the rain wasn’t the only issue M.I.A. faced Saturday night. Reports from concertgoers, as well as M.I.A. herself, bemoaned the sound system’s rather questionable abilities. “Money doesnt buy u s—!,” she tweeted on Sunday, several hours after the gig. “I thought more money means better sound guys in america/\/\/\! i was wrong, the higher u go , they turn u lower!”

While no date for the show is confirmed, this isn’t the only free gig M.I.A. has in her future. She’s scheduled to appear at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sept. 25, as a part of the Virgin Mobile “FreeFest” alongside LCD Soundsystem, Pavement, Matt and Kim, Joan Jett and Thievery Corporation. She’ll also serve as one of the headliners at the Austin City Limits festival this October.

For SPIN’s August issue story about M.I.A., we commissioned street artist Billi Kid to design an image of the Sri Lankan provocateur — and post it on a wall in downtown New York City. Of course, we tagged along on his clandestine mission. Watch the video below!

SPIN’s collaboration with Kid was born from our appreciation of the rising artist’s work, which has appeared everywhere from TIME magazine to the buildings of New York City. Known for his colorful images of pop culture figures like Barack and Michelle Obama (see his website), Kid worked with SPIN to portray M.I.A. through the lens of another iconic pop figure: Marxist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara, or, more specifically, the image of him that has become synonymous with rebellion.

“Respectfully paying homage to Jim Fitzpatrick’s iconic portrait of Che was a concern from the get go,” Kid tells SPIN. “I wanted to transition M.I.A. and her revolutionary chic in a clear and seamless manner — without having it turn into a campy parody.

“Like M.I.A., I often like to incorporate politics into my work. While her approach is more radicalized and direct, mine is tongue in cheek and ambiguous in nature. I feel the connection lies in that we both find a need to keep the conversation alive.”

Watch the video of Billi Kid’s rebel street art.

/\/\ /\ Y /\, M.I.A’s acclaimed new album is available now! If you haven’t bought it already, get it HERE!

“A Classic! 9 out of 10″ –Spin

“Some people resent the way M.I.A refuses to forget where she’s been, which means war zones, refugee camps and housing projects, but also art school and dance clubs. Yet that’s what makes the music so expansive… She covers so much ground because it’s all a part of who she is. And from the sound of /\/\ /\ Y /\, she’s capable of anything – except being dull.” **** – Rolling Stone

“This is what we love about M.I.A., seeing her make those leaps and landing.” – Stereogum

The lineup for the Virgin Mobile Fest was unveiled Tuesday, and like last year’s event, the 2010 installment is looking to be one the summer’s musical highlights: M.I.A., LCD Soundsystem, Pavement, T.I., and Ludacris top an eclectic bill set to take the stage at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, on September 25. The best part: tickets are free. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Yes, completely free.

Thank you Virgin Chairman and 261st Richest Person in the World, Sir Richard Branson, who announced the lineup on a new web TV show, Virgin Mobile Live, on virginmobilefestival.com.

Rounding out the fest’s bill are Joan Jett, Thievery Corporation, Matt & Kim, Jimmy Eat World, the Temper Trap, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, and Yeasayer. This year’s event will also feature a “dance forest,” where artists like Chromeo, Sleigh Bells, Die Antwoord, Modeselektor, and Neon Indian will perform.

“Because we have the luxury of giving away the tickets it becomes a privilege to book the most important acts out there,” said Virgin Mobile FreeFest concert producer Seth Hurwitz. “Our goal is simply to book the coolest bands we can. This year we’re breaking with the traditional format of monster headliner trickling down to baby bands, and instead we’re sprinkling fantastic acts all day long. It’s kind of like a festival on full-day shuffle.”

To score your free ticket to Virgin Fest, head to ticketfly.com at 10 A.M. EST on Saturday, July 24. Virgin Mobile customers and previous Virgin Mobile Festival ticket holders will be invited via text and email to a private “free-sale” on Friday July 23.

While the show is free, Virgin Mobile is encouraging fans to donate $5 to end youth homelessness and receive a 20-minute mash-up of the fest’s performing acts, remixed and produced by Rusko.
