M.I.A. has enlisted the help of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in her ongoing visa battles, after authorities refused the rapper’s mother permission to visit her newborn grandson.
The Paper Planes hitmaker has clashed with immigration officials over her own status after courting controversy with her comments about political unrest in Sri Lanka.
Now the star’s family has been dragged into the visa dispute – her mother Kala tried to visit M.I.A.’s baby son Ikhyd but was blocked from entering America, prompting the rapper to call on Clinton for help.
She tells Q magazine, “They’ve singled me out. They said my mum would be fine if I just apologised to the Sri Lankan embassy. Which I’m not gonna do. It’s not like she actually knows how to make a f**king bomb, strap it on and walk into Tesco’s (supermarket)… We’ve had Hillary Clinton involved. Hills got back (to us) and she was like, ‘You know, it happens…’”
A remembrance to Aaliyah, Anthony Dodd, Eric Foreman, Scott Gallin, Keeth Wallace, Gina Smith, Douglas Kratz, and Christopher Maldonado, lost their lives on this exact day (August 25th). 9 years later you are not forgotten! All of you are deeply missed ….. ♥
There are no new M.I.A. updates right now. But it gives me time to update the gallery with photos that I haven’t even added to the gallery yet, and to finally concentrate on the forum. The forum will have a new look within the next few weeks. So if you want a new feature or section on the board leave a comment, tweet me, or if your a member on the forum you can leave a thoughts in the What would you like to see on the forum thread. Just because we don’t add it right doesn’t mean we’ve ignored your suggestions…your comments mean a lot because its a forum for the fans You can also send an email to miafanz@gmail.com
MIA closed the second night of the Flow Festival in Finland last night (August 14).
The singer drew a massive crowd to the Main Stage for a spectacular show which saw her team up with Sleigh Bells guitarist and label mate Derek E. Miller near the end.
Unlike her recent performances which saw her shows cut short at the Big Chill and New York’s Hard NYC Party, her headline slot in Helsinki went off without a hitch.
The singer, who drafted in three backing singers, a dancer and a DJ for the show, performed a host of tracks from all of her three albums – 2005’s ‘Arula’, 2007’s ‘Kala’ and her recent LP ‘Maya’ – against a backdrop of multi-coloured lasers.
MIA, who was dressed in shades and a grey trenchcoat, said very little throughout her set, much of which she spent going into the crowd.
During ‘Boyz’, she also brought a group of guys onstage to dance before she was later joined by Miller on guitar for ‘Meds And Feds’, a track he produced which also features a riff from the title track to Sleigh Bells’ recent debut album ‘Treats’. Watch footage of the track below.
“It’s only the second time Derek has done it but I’m sure he had a lot of fun getting up there and playing,” the noise pop duo’s singer Alexis Krauss said before adding: “Unfortunately I missed him because I really wanted to check out Beach House. I hope he didn’t mind.”
The show ended with ‘Born Free’ and 2008 hit single ‘Paper Planes’.
MIA played:
‘Illygirl’
‘World Town’
‘XR2′
‘Bamboo Banga’
‘Lovalot’
‘Bucky Done Gun’
‘U.R.A.Q.T.’
‘Boyz’
‘Amazon’
‘Galang’
‘Story To Be Told’
‘Meds And Feds’
‘Born Free’
‘Paper Planes’
M.I.A. performed a controversy-free set at Oslo’s Øya Festival2010 on Wednesday (Aug. 11). No rainstorm or stage crashers could stop her from finishing her set this time around. Wearing a sparkly red-and-black checkered top, Dior undershirt, jeans, and SUPER sunglasses, Maya brightened up the night with a laser extravaganza. Watch a video of her performing “XR2″ at the Øya Festival below….
M.I.A has announced details of an intimate show in Manchester.
Playing as part of the upcoming Warehouse Project, the singer-rapper will perform at a tiny venue underneath Piccadilly train station on November 13.
Meanwhile, Maximo Park, Kelis and Calvin Harris are also part of the line-up for this year’s Warehouse Project.
As previously reported, MIA was forced to cut short her set at last weekend’s (August 7) Big Chill Festival, after fans invaded the stage.
